Joachim Liebermann's watch
Before the outbreak of World War II, the Liebermanns and related Druks were co-owners of Emil Kuźnicki’s Roofing Paper Factory in Brzezinka (founded in 1888). In 1939, both families fled to the East to escape the impending war. Their odyssey led through Lvov, labor camps in the depths of the USSR (Kozmodemyansk in the Mari Republic and Omsk in Siberia) to Uzbekistan (Tashkent and Samarkand). The Druks – Iro, Łucja and their children Adam and Elinoar together with the Polish Army of General Anders reached Teheran and Baghdad. They finally reached Palestine on December 31, 1942. Joachim (1876-1950) and Józefina (1879-1958) Liebermann remained in Samarkand because of their advanced age, and returned briefly to Oświęcim after the war. They eventually joined the rest of the family after the war. Joachim Liebermann gave this watch to the Nagi family before his departure from Oświęcim in 1947. Anna Nagi was the children’s caretaker at the Liebermann home. The two families were friends, and after Joachim and Józefina Liebermann left for Palestine, they continued to maintain cordial relations. Gift of Łukasz Jakubowski, grandson of Anna Nagi. Fragment of a letter from Mr. and Mrs. Liebermann to Anna Nagi from Oświęcim (December 22, 1947): My Hania! I’m sure that Hania received a card from Prague. I did not write about my further travels, because I was very ill. We have already been three weeks at Lotusia’s and we are very well there. Lotusia’s children are very sweet […]. The flowers that Hania brought, I took care of on the way when we arrived, we planted them and now they are already sprouting. We are happy about them, because they are from home, and I thank you once again for them. How are you doing? What is father doing, how is Johnny? As for me, I feel a little better, but I can’t help much. Lotusia doesn’t let me work at all, and there is so much work. Lotusia has 2 goats and almost 200 hens […]. Please also write to us extensively about everything, and I will write back soon. Greetings to Mrs Cwiertniakowa and Pietrek, and to you all. Your Józefa Liebermannowa
