An original enamel board with the German name of Stolarska Street – Tischlerstraße – is a trace of the introduction of German-language names by the occupants. The plaque was found in 2004 during archeological work at the site of the Great Synagogue on Berka Joselewicza Street. Oświęcim was occupied by the German army on September 3, 1939. Under Hitler’s decree of October 8, the city, which was renamed Auschwitz, and its environs were incorporated into the Third Reich. As part of the Bielsko district (Kreis Bielitz O/S), Oświęcim became part of the so-called Katowice Regency (Regierungsbezirk Kattowitz).
